The shamisen is a Japanese culture that you listen to, play, and experience in Fukuoka.

  • Now that I've come all the way to Japan, I want to try playing Japanese musical instruments.
  • I am interested in Japanese culture. It would be cool to play the shamisen while wearing a kimono.
  • I want to surprise everyone by posting a video of me playing the shamisen on SNS.

…and so on. Any motivation is OK!

Let's start by trying the shamisen!

Check

What you can experience here is the shamisen of the genre called "Kouta". You may have seen geisha in the tatami room perform in TV.
We don't use "Bachi(Pick)" for the shamisen of kouta. It is played in a style called "nail-playing", but it is actually played with the flesh of the finger, not the nails, and it makes a soft sound.

Flow of shamisen experience

Hello! Welcome to my house!
You will have a shamisen experience in a regular Japanese apartment room.

Please take off your shoes before entering. (Japanese style)

【Optional】Select one from kimonos. There are for men and women.

【Optional】Wear a "Hadajuban" over your underwear in the separate room.

【Optional】I will dress you. Please let me know if you are feeling any discomfort.

The instrument used is called the 'Chu-zao(middle-neck)'shamisen. The strings, from thickest to thinnest, are referred to as the 'Ichi no ito' (first string), 'Ni no ito' (second string), and 'San no ito' (third string)

Learn how to hold the shamisen.
Use a "Hiza-gomu(knee rubber)" to prevent the shamisen from slipping.
Put a"Yubi-suri(finger strap)" on your left hand, slide it and press the string with your finger (preferably using your fingernails).

We also have chairs available for those who find it difficult to sit in the traditional Japanese seiza posture.

Now, let's try playing the shamisen.
Strum the strings softly with your right index finger.
A numbered tape is attached to the neck of the shamisen.

I have a simple musical score for you. It's a traditional Japanese song called "Sakura". It might be the first type of score you've seen, but don't worry, I will guide you carefully.

After practicing for a while, you can perform at the end.
Smartphone stands and tripods are also available, so you can record your practice and performance.

I will also perform a Japanese "Kouta".

Finally, let's take many pictures to remember your experience.

Did you enjoy the shamisen experience?
Have a pleasant trip!
